Kate Tunnell is in the class of 2024 at Harvard. She is undecided concentration-wise but is leaning towards Sociology with a secondary in Global Health and Health Policy. In her free time, Kate does yoga, uses oil paints, does pen and charcoal drawings, and cooks. She is affiliated with Oak Yard, but she is currently living on-campus in Leverett House. Kate took a gap year and spent last fall in Florence, Italy taking painting and drawing classes, while she learned about Italian culture. Hopefully, when the studios open, Kate will experiment with classes in AFAS throughout her time at Harvard.
“Isle of the Dead; A Recreation,” is one of the first realistic paintings I have done using oil. I love stark lines and bright contrast, but the Isle of the Dead; A Recreation uses soft light transitions to create a scene of depth and mystery. Differently from Bocklin’s original painting, I utilize more blending and color similarity here to yield a less-harsh image. There is a faint glow beyond the loom of the island, signifying there may be life beyond this isle of death” Kate Tunnell, ‘24
