Asians on average do best on IQ tests. The Chinese researcher Dr Bruce Lahn reported a genetic evolution that occurred in human beings about 6,000 years ago and is believed to be an important contributing factor in intelligence.

Scientists who have researched this mutation have found evidence that it was geographically dispersed in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Sub-saharan Africa was geographically isolated by comparison, so the mutation occured there at a much lower incidence. This is not simple IQ sampling on racial lines – it’s statistical data examining for the presence of a precise genetic trait that scientists believe to be connected to the brain’s size and function.

This research appeared in one of the leading peer reviewed journals a year ago:

“Ongoing adaptive evolution of ASPM, a brain size determinant in Homo sapiens. Science, 309:1720 (2005).

Based purely on what I have read from media quotes, if his claims that what he says have been ‘proved’ or has been ‘tested’, I don’t particularly find it overtly offensive. The statement regarding working with black employees, however, does seem rather offensive as it is directed at a race based purely on individual impressions, not ‘scientific’ proof.

The statement that not everyone may have evolved equally due to spatial difference, I think, is very true and very probable. I, however, do not have any scientific proof for the claim. But such a hypothesis does seem reasonable to delve into, as we would all know that evolution is directed by multiple factors, some of which would be living environment.

Dr Watson’s resignation I feel is largely forced upon him created by much media hype. As a scientist who discovers and creates new hypotheses, such words seem far from offensive.
